Reflection
Before I started working at Get-Kinetic Inc., the first objective I had was to explore how professional editors work in an environment like GK. During my post-production experience, I was able to work with programs like Final Cut Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop. In every case, I mainly worked under my supervisor, Kathryn Lahr (and in some cases, with Kevin Hackenberg).
My first post-production assignment was to put together a thumbnail graphic for a company called CubeSmart. In order to create this graphic, I had to watch a promotional video and screen-grab a few images that could be used for the background. Afterwards, I added some text and some effects in Photoshop to finish the image.
Another example of my work was with an ending graphic that required work in both After Effects and Photoshop. I was given some images to touch up and alter in order to enhance their presentation. Once that was done, I moved those images and some video into After Effects to animate a single moving graphic to be used in a book trailer for Princess Dancer.
My last example is footage from a rough cut of the short film: Through the Morning. I synced up the footage and the audio, then began working on the first edit of the film.
From the work I have done and the experience I have been given, I have learned that working in a professional environment like Get-Kinetic is much different than doing freelance work on my own. Even when I wasn't doing post-production work, I was able to watch Dan Gauthier (head of visual fx) operate when working with Kathryn. Some jobs required more feedback from my supervisor, while others were more self-explanitory and wouldn't need me to collaborate as much. In any case, the more hands that were on a project, the better the final product would look. I've also learned that while working for a professional production company, work might vary from a few narrative projects that need to be edited together, to many promotional videos that only need some graphic work, all depending on what (and how many) clients you work with.
There will always be room for improvement. However, something I wish to continue improving would be my skills with the programs that I work with, especially After Effects. When I compare the work I've done in After Effects to the things that Kathryn Lahr and Dan Gauthier accomplish on a daily basis, I feel as though there is much I still have to learn. This will be something I will strive to grow in, and hopefully go above and beyond my own expectations.
Aside from the examples below, I've also included a link to my ongoing reflective commentary.
